Nigeria was not among Apple's first 65 launch countries for the iPhone 18 Pro, so many Nigerians are asking the same question: is it cheaper to import one myself?

Below is a realistic, line-by-line estimate. It is arithmetic, not a promise — every number here can move.

Estimate note: figures are dated 10 September 2026 and use an indicative rate of about ₦1,350 to the dollar. Freight rates, customs assessments and the exchange rate all change. Get live quotes before you commit.

The four routes, in order of cost

Route Rough landed cost (256GB Pro) Effort and risk
Hand-carried by a traveller you trust ₦1.65m–₦1.9m Lowest cost, needs a trip
Courier from the US/UK to Lagos ₦2.0m–₦2.4m Paperwork, customs risk
Nigerian pre-order seller about ₦2.5m Easiest, deposit risk
Nigerian retailer with stock ₦2.5m–₦3.0m+ Easiest, highest price

Line by line: courier import from the USA

1. The phone — $1,199 (about ₦1,620,000) Apple's US price for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro. Sales tax varies by state; a few charge none. Buy in a no-tax state and you save 6–9% immediately.

2. US sales tax — ₦0 to ₦145,000 Depends entirely on the shipping address.

3. Domestic US shipping or forwarding fee — ₦8,000 to ₦25,000 If you use a package-forwarding service, expect a handling fee per parcel.

4. International courier to Nigeria — ₦90,000 to ₦180,000 Express air freight on a small, high-value parcel. Cheaper economy options exist but take longer and are handled more times.

5. Insurance — 1% to 3% of declared value (₦20,000 to ₦50,000) Skip this and you are gambling ₦1.6 million on a conveyor belt. Do not skip it.

6. Nigerian customs duty, levies and VAT — ₦150,000 to ₦400,000 This is the least predictable line. Couriered electronics are assessed on declared value, and the total charge depends on the classification applied, the declared amount and the day. Under-declaring is illegal and can cost you the phone.

7. Clearing agent or courier handling — ₦15,000 to ₦60,000 Charged by whoever moves your parcel through the process.

8. Local delivery — ₦3,000 to ₦10,000

Estimated total: roughly ₦1.9 million to ₦2.4 million.

Against a ₦2.5 million local quote, you might save ₦150,000 to ₦500,000 — and you carry every risk yourself.

Line by line: hand-carried by a traveller

Shipping boxes and customs paperwork on a desk

1. The phone — $1,199 (about ₦1,620,000), or £1,199 in the UK (about ₦2,150,000)

2. Sales tax as above, or UK VAT already included in the £1,199.

3. Freight — ₦0. It travels in hand luggage.

4. Customs — usually ₦0 in practice for a single phone in personal use, but officers have discretion and can assess anything they consider commercial quantity. Keep the receipt, and do not travel with five sealed boxes.

5. A thank-you to the traveller — ₦20,000 to ₦100,000, or a favour returned.

Estimated total: about ₦1.65 million to ₦1.9 million from the US. This is the cheapest legitimate route, which is why most Nigerians with family abroad use it.

The three traps

1. eSIM-only units. Apple sells eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro models — with no SIM tray — in a fixed list of countries including the US, Canada, Japan, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Nigeria is not on it. A US-bought Pro will usually have no tray. Read our SIM guide before you choose a country.

2. Warranty logistics. Apple's warranty is serviced through authorised providers. A unit bought abroad can still be serviced, but parts and approvals may take longer, and you will need proof of purchase. See how to check the warranty in Nigeria.

3. Activation locks and finance locks. A phone still under a US carrier instalment plan can be locked remotely. Only buy from Apple directly or an authorised retailer, and check the IMEI. Our guide on spotting a fake or refurbished unit covers the checks.

When importing is a bad idea

  • You need the phone within a week
  • You cannot absorb the loss if the parcel disappears
  • Nobody you trust is travelling
  • You would need to borrow to cover customs on arrival

In those cases, buy locally from an established seller — the premium is the price of certainty. Our guide to where to buy safely in Nigeria lists what a trustworthy seller looks like.

The honest alternative

Every phone on AffordablePhones.ng lands between ₦60,000 and ₦500,000, in Nigeria, with no customs adventure. If the import maths is starting to feel heavy, that is your instinct talking — see our alternatives to the iPhone 18 Pro or tell us your budget on WhatsApp.
